Michael E. Brumbaugh is an Associate Professor of Classical Studies and Associate Dean for College Curriculum and Policy at Tulane University's School of Liberal Arts. He holds a Ph.D. in Classics from UCLA (2011), an M.A. from UCLA (2007), and a B.A. from Colgate University (2004). His research bridges Greek/Roman literature, ancient political thought, and classical traditions in colonial Latin America. He has held academic positions at Tulane since 2013, Princeton, and Reed College.
His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, particularly in analyzing how classical ideas influenced colonial Latin American thought. Notable publications include a forthcoming translation of Josep Manuel Peramás' work on Guaraní governance and studies on Callimachus' hymns. He has received multiple grants and fellowships, including NEH funding and Loeb Classical Library fellowships.
Brumbaugh advises on curriculum policy and has contributed to community-engaged scholarship initiatives. He is fluent in Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Latin, with overseas experience in Paraguay and Argentina. His research spans ancient literary analysis, colonial cultural history, and classical reception studies.
