Michael E. Brown is a Professor of International Affairs and Political Science at the George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, serving as Interim Director of the Institute for Security and Conflict Studies. He previously served as Dean of the Elliott School from 2005 to 2015. His career includes roles at Georgetown University, Harvard University’s Belfer Center, and the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. He was Editor of Survival (1991-1994) and Co-Editor of International Security (1994-2006), and currently sits on editorial boards of Asian Security, International Security, and The Washington Quarterly.
Education: Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University. His research focuses on international security, conflict resolution, gender and security, and U.S. foreign and defense policy. He has authored Flying Blind: The Politics of the U.S. Strategic Bomber Program (Edgar Furniss Award winner) and edited/co-edited 23 books, including The Gender and Security Agenda: Strategies for the 21st Century and Grave New World: Security Challenges in the 21st Century.
Award recognition includes the Edgar Furniss National Security Book Award. He has advised through courses such as Gender, Conflict and Security and International Security. His global engagement includes over 150 talks in 30 countries and travel to 75 nations, reflecting his commitment to advancing security studies and policy analysis.
