Barbara Miller is a Professor of Anthropology and International Affairs at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs. A full-time faculty member since 1993, she specializes in the anthropology of international development, gender studies, and South Asia. Her research addresses gender and health in India, rural development in Bangladesh, and food culture's sociocultural dimensions.
She earned her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Anthropology from Syracuse University. Professional leadership roles include Director of GW’s Women’s Studies Program (1994-1999), Associate Dean of the Elliott School (1999-2002 and 2009-2012), and founding director of the Elliott School’s Global Gender Research & Policy Program (2010-2016). She currently leads a U.S. State Department-funded partnership with Lahore College for Women University to enhance cross-cultural academic collaboration.
Her teaching spans undergraduate courses in cultural and medical anthropology, and graduate seminars on development anthropology, migration, and globalization. Research interests coalesce around cultural globalization, policy anthropology, and social inequality.
