Michael Dubnewick is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Regina. Born and raised on Treaty 7 Territory in Calgary, he now resides on Treaty 4 Territory in Regina, conducting community-engaged narrative inquiry focused on equitable recreation, sport, and wellness programming.
His research spans:
- Indigenous youth leadership development through initiatives like Growing Young Movers (@gymovers)
- Community wellness programming in precarious housing contexts
- Food-based interventions including urban community gardens
- Narrative methodologies for understanding lived experiences
Currently holding an SSHRC-SHRF grant, his work investigates Indigenous youth composing leadership identities within afterschool programs and wellness practitioners' experiences in food security initiatives. Teaching concentrates on sport and recreation studies, with personal narratives about cooking, gardening, and family (wife Claire; pets Bella and Theo) woven into academic practice.
Dr. Dubnewick mentors students in recreation equity research while actively collaborating with urban communities on program development and evaluation, emphasizing decolonizing approaches to wellness.
