Michael C. Desch is the Brian and Jeannelle Brady Family Director of the Notre Dame International Security Center and the Packey J. Dee Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. He previously served as Chair of the Department of Political Science and held leadership roles at Texas A&M University, including founding Director of the Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs. With a B.A. from Marquette University (1982), M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1984, 1988), Desch is a renowned scholar in international relations, American foreign policy, and national security. His research emphasizes civil-military relations, democratic governance of security policy, and the relevance of social science to policy-making.
Desch’s career includes roles in U.S. Senator staff, the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research, and Congressional Research Service. He has authored influential books like Cult of the Irrelevant (2018) and Power and Military Effectiveness (2008). His work bridges academia and policy, critiquing the disconnect between scholarly research and practical national security decision-making.
