Michael D. Naish is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering and cross-appointed to Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Western Ontario. He serves as Director of the Mechatronic Systems Engineering program and holds a Scientist appointment at the Canadian Surgical Technologies and Advanced Robotics Institute (CSTAR), a collaboration between London Health Sciences Centre, Lawson Health Research Institute, and Western University.
- Ph.D. in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, University of Toronto (2004)
- M.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, University of British Columbia (1999)
- B.E.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, University of Western Ontario (1996)
- B.Sc. in Computer Science, University of Western Ontario (1996)
His research focuses on mechatronics and robotics, particularly in intelligent control systems and vision-based sensing technologies, with applications in minimally-invasive surgery. He has been affiliated with IEEE and ASME since 2007, holds Ontario Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensure, and has advised numerous graduate students in mechanical and mechatronic systems engineering.
Dr. Naish's work bridges automation technologies, surgical robotics, and sensor integration. His professional experience includes industrial R&D at General Motors (1994-1995) and academic leadership roles at Western University since 2003.
As a Scientist at CSTAR, he contributes to interdisciplinary research combining engineering principles with clinical applications. His technical expertise spans mechatronic design, robotic control algorithms, and computer vision systems for both industrial and medical environments.
- Member, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
- Member, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
- Ontario Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
Dr. Naish has mentored multiple graduate students across his dual appointments in Mechanical & Materials Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering.
