Michael Crossland is a part-time Senior Research Fellow at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and a Principal Optometrist at Moorfields Eye Hospital. His research focuses on vision impairment, particularly the mental health impacts of sight loss and technological interventions for low vision populations. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed papers and two major books in the field.

His expertise spans ophthalmology, optometry, and vision science rehabilitation. Current research is funded by the Macular Society, Moorfields Eye Charity, and the Medical Research Foundation.
He received the 2022 Neil Charman Medal for Research from the College of Optometrists. His career includes roles as Hon Senior Research Associate at UCL (2013–2021), Senior Research Fellow at Anglia Ruskin University (2013–2014), and NIHR Postdoctoral Fellow (2008–2013).
