Dr. Ahalya Subramanian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Optometry and Visual Sciences at City, University of London, where she has been employed since 2006. She previously served as Programme Director for the Foundation Degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing and Undergraduate Optometry Programme, and as Head of Department from 2016-2019. She also holds external examiner positions at Aston University and the University of Manchester, and serves as a trustee for Vision Action and board member of the International Society for Low Vision Research and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Subramanian is a registered optometrist who graduated from the Elite School of Optometry in Chennai, India, where she was awarded best optometry student three years in a row. She completed her PhD in visual impairment at UMIST (now University of Manchester), funded by the Guide Dogs for Blind Association, followed by a post-doctoral position at Anglia Ruskin University.
Her research focuses on improving quality of life and reading ability for visually impaired adults and children through technology. Her early work investigated spatial localization, reaching and grasping, and reading, while more recent research explores qualitative approaches and technology applications including mobile devices for visually impaired people and virtual assistants. She has expanded her research to include caregivers of visually impaired individuals, children with special needs (particularly Cerebral Visual Impairment), and global barriers to eye care services. Her 2023 Neil Charman Medal recognized her research on the impact of COVID-19 on eye health services and telerehabilitation.
Dr. Subramanian's research has been funded by organizations including the College of Optometrists, Macular Society, RNIB, Royal Society, Eleanor Peel Trust, Fight for Sight, and the institutional Global Challenges Research Fund. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences.
Among her scientific awards are the prestigious Neil Charman Medal (2023) for research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on eye health services, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2018). During her undergraduate studies, she was awarded best optometry student three years consecutively.
Dr. Subramanian currently supervises multiple doctoral and MSc students researching topics including visual impairment in children with special needs, experiences of people with age-related macular degeneration, and technology to improve medication adherence in glaucoma patients. She also serves as Clinical Lead for the Visual Impairment Clinic at City University and reviews for numerous academic journals including Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics and Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
