Michael Collyer

Michael Collyer is Professor of Geography at the University of Sussex's School of Global Studies, where he has progressed from Lecturer to Professor since his appointment. Currently on research leave for 2024-25, he previously held a Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Washington and visiting positions in Egypt, France, Morocco, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. His career includes a Marie Curie Fellowship in Sri Lanka and a Nuffield Fellowship in Morocco.

His research focuses on:

• Geopolitics of migration control: Analyzing state strategies and border policies
• Forced displacement: Refugee movements, protracted crises, and humanitarian responses
• Urban geography: Mobility patterns and marginalization in cities

He directs projects like Protracted Displacement Economies and Inclusive Urban Infrastructure, conducting fieldwork across Africa, South Asia, and Europe.
