Professor Michael Christie is a leading academic in Indigenous studies and education at Charles Darwin University (CDU), affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Society and the Northern Institute. He holds a Professorial appointment and leads the Contemporary Indigenous Governance and Knowledge Systems research team. His career began in the 1970s as a teacher-linguist in Yolŋu communities, later establishing CDU’s Yolŋu Studies program. Christie’s research focuses on transdisciplinary methodologies, Indigenous knowledge systems, and collaborative projects addressing governance, health, and environmental challenges. He has pioneered digital archiving initiatives like the Living Archive of Aboriginal Languages, emphasizing culturally responsive approaches to knowledge preservation.
Key areas of expertise include Yolŋu philosophy, language revitalization, and community-driven research frameworks. Christie has collaborated extensively with Aboriginal elders, NGOs, and governments to evaluate services in health, housing, and resource management. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those addressing education, health, and environmental sustainability.
Christie has received multiple accolades, including the NT Australian of the Year (2011) and the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Research Impact (2023). He supervises postgraduate researchers and contributes to CDU’s teaching programs, emphasizing Indigenous methodologies. Current projects include the ‘Ground Up’ monitoring framework for community development and the ‘Rainmaker’ initiatives focusing on Indigenous-led sea country management.
His publications span transdisciplinary research, health interventions, and policy analysis, with a focus on bridging gaps between academic and Indigenous knowledge systems.
