Michael Chai is a Professor in Internet of Things and Director of the Joint Programme with Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Queen Mary University of London. He is a member of the Communication Systems Research Group and focuses on dynamic resource management, wireless communications, and smart grid networks.

- PhD in Mobile Communication Networks, Queen Mary University of London (2007)
His research spans Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Grids, and Machine-to-Machine Communications, with applications in intelligent transport systems, home automation, and energy-efficient networks. Current projects include the £720,000 SPOC-APP initiative for spatial big data analysis and the €1.42M IRENE project on urban electricity network robustness.
Recent scientific awards include:

- 2011 IET ICCTA Best Paper Award
- 2010 UBICOMM Best Paper Award
- 2001 SHARC DSP Conference Best Paper Award
He has taught modules like Internet Protocols, Telecom Systems, and Networks and Protocols since joining Queen Mary University of London in 2008. Current PhD students include Mr Chao Liu (Energy Demand Response using Electric Vehicles) and Mr Mohammed Alenezi (LoRaWAN).
