Michael C. Pope is a Professor and Interim Director of the Berg-Hughes Center for Petroleum and Sedimentary Systems at Texas A&M University. His research focuses on sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy, and unconventional resources. He holds a B.S. from UCLA, an M.S. from the University of Montana, and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. His work explores climatic and tectonic influences on sedimentary systems, detrital zircon geochronology, and meteorite impact deformation in carbonates.
Education:
- B.S. Earth and Planetary Sciences, UCLA (1985)
- M.S. Geology, University of Montana (1989)
- Ph.D. Geology, Virginia Tech (1995)
- Post-doctoral Research Associate, MIT (1995–1998)
Research interests include sequence stratigraphy’s role in reservoir characterization, depositional processes of unconventional resources, and structural deformation from meteorite impacts. His work integrates litho-, chemo-, and chronostratigraphy to understand climatic and oceanic processes.
Selected Awards:
- Geological Society of America Fellow (2008)
- Outstanding Student Research Proposal, GSA Sedimentary Division (1993)
- National Association of Geology Teachers-U.S.G.S. Summer Field Assistantship (1985)
Advising and Grants: Dr. Pope has advised numerous graduate students (e.g., S. Gifford, A. Al-Bader) and contributed to projects on unconventional resources and carbonate systems. His research is supported by grants from institutions focusing on sedimentary geology and petroleum systems.
Labs/Teams: He leads the Berg-Hughes Center, a hub for petroleum and sedimentary systems research, fostering collaboration in reservoir characterization and stratigraphic modeling.
