Michael C. Dorf is the Robert S. Stevens Professor of Law at Cornell Law School, where he has taught since 2008 after previously teaching at Columbia Law School (1994-2008) and Rutgers-Camden Law School (1991-1994). A distinguished constitutional scholar, he maintains an active research agenda and prolific publication record spanning constitutional theory, animal rights, and contemporary legal issues.
His research interests include constitutional interpretation, Supreme Court jurisprudence, animal rights law, and the intersection of law and politics. Dorf co-authors the blog Dorf on Law with other legal scholars and writes a bi-weekly column for Justia's Verdict. His scholarly work includes numerous books such as On Reading the Constitution (with Laurence Tribe), The Oxford Introductions to U.S. Law: Constitutional Law (with Trevor Morrison), and Beating Hearts: Abortion and Animal Rights (with Sherry Colb).
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a sharp focus on contemporary constitutional crises, particularly regarding the Trump administration's challenges to constitutional norms, Supreme Court decisions affecting transgender rights, and the evolving landscape of judicial review. His work often bridges theoretical constitutional scholarship with immediate practical implications for American democracy.
Dorf maintains an active pro bono practice focused on Supreme Court amicus briefs and has conducted federally funded interdisciplinary research on cigarette warning labels. His academic trajectory includes clerkships with Judge Stephen Reinhardt and Justice Anthony Kennedy, and he earned his law degree from Harvard Law School after undergraduate studies at Harvard College.
