Michael Byrne is a Lecturer at the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice at University College Dublin. His research focuses on the interplay between finance, the state, and the urban environment, particularly in housing and tenant rights.

Byrne's research explores urban political economy, financialization of housing, and tenant activism. His recent studies examine post-neoliberal housing policies, the impact of the pandemic on rental tenants, and financialization trends in social housing.

He teaches modules on Critical Political Economy, Social Justice and the City, and coordinates Human Rights Law and Equality. Byrne also engages in public discourse through podcasts and lectures on housing inequality and urban policy.
