Michael Butler is the Director of the Professional Law Institute (PLI) and Senior Lecturer in Law at The Dickson Poon School of Law, King's College London. He transitioned to academia after over 25 years in legal practice, including roles as a partner at Squire Patton Boggs and General Counsel of a UK private equity-backed legal firm. His research focuses on the intersection of technology and law, particularly ethics in legal technology and skills training for in-house lawyers. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and actively contributes to legal education innovation through events like the 'AI and Legal Education' book launch (2025).
Teaching responsibilities include modules on Information Privacy & Data Protection and Business Organizations. His public engagements span events discussing AI's impact on legal practice, digital asset regulation, and personal branding in the legal sector. He has authored key works on legal technology and digital media law, reflecting his dual expertise in practice and academia.
