Michael Brzoska is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy (IFSH) at the University of Hamburg, where he previously served as Scientific Director (2006-2016). His academic affiliations include membership in the Hamburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and an Associate Senior Fellowship with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
He holds a background in economics and political science from the University of Hamburg and University of Fribourg (Switzerland), with a doctorate on German arms export policy and habilitation on the 'Militarization of the Third World'.
Brzoska's research examines:
- Climate-conflict linkages, particularly how extreme weather disasters influence violent conflicts
- European security policy and arms control mechanisms
- Military expenditure trends and arms trade dynamics
- Human security approaches to defense policy
His publications show strong interdisciplinary focus on security economics, climate impacts, and policy analysis, often employing mixed-method approaches. Recent works address defense procurement efficiency (2024), peace ethics (2023), and climate-conflict mechanisms (2020).
