Michael Bruhn Barfod

Michael Bruhn Barfod is an Associate Professor in the Department of Technology, Management and Economics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where he is actively engaged in research and teaching within operations, supply chain management, and decision science. He currently serves as Head of Studies for the MSc program in Industrial Engineering and Management and has completed the highest teaching certification at DTU.

His research centers on multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), impact assessment, and decision support systems, with applications in transport infrastructure, energy efficiency, and sustainable shipping. He applies both qualitative and quantitative methods to real-world case studies, often in collaboration with industry and international partners. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to sustainable cities, climate action, and affordable clean energy.

The recent publications highlight a strong trend in sustainable maritime logistics, electric mobility in developing regions, and methodological improvements in decision-making frameworks like the Analytic Hierarchy Process. His work integrates machine learning, environmental modeling, and policy evaluation, particularly in shipping emissions and port energy systems.

Michael Bruhn Barfod has supervised multiple PhD and master’s students and is currently the main supervisor for PhD projects on green shipping corridors and carbon emissions monitoring. He leads or participates in significant research grants, including the IMAGES and NICE projects, funded by national and international bodies, focusing on impact assessment and regulatory frameworks for sustainable shipping. His collaborative network spans Europe and beyond, with frequent co-authorship with researchers such as G. Panagakos and A. Godet.

He is actively involved in research labs and teams focused on transport modeling, decision support, and sustainability assessment at DTU Management. His projects often involve interdisciplinary teams working on energy efficiency, maritime compliance, and urban mobility planning.
