Michael Briley

Dr. Michael Briley is a Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Appalachian State University's College of Arts and Sciences. His academic journey includes faculty positions at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh (1994-2011), a WJ McDonald Prize Fellowship at the University of Texas (1990-1994), and a four-year directorship at the National Science Foundation concurrent with his Wisconsin appointment.

Dr. Briley earned his BS in Astronomy with Honors in the Liberal Arts from The Ohio State University (1985), followed by MS (1989) and PhD (1990) in Astronomy from the University of Maryland. His doctoral thesis examined carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen abundance variations in galactic globular clusters under advisor Roger A. Bell.

His research centers on nuclear reactions in old stars and galactic evolution, with expertise spanning stellar interiors, atmospheres, proton-nucleosynthesis, and observational techniques. Recent work leverages the Dark Sky Observatory for studies of eclipsing binaries, stellar populations, and instrumentation development.
