Michael Bowen, M.D., is an Associate Professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center with joint appointments in the Department of Internal Medicine, the Department of Population and Data Sciences, and the Department of Pediatrics. He is a member of the Division of General Internal Medicine and actively contributes to clinical, research, and educational missions across disciplines.
Dr. Bowen completed his medical degree, residency in internal medicine and pediatrics, and Master of Public Health at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He further advanced his training through the VA National Quality Scholars Fellowship Program and earned a Master of Science in Clinical Science from UT Southwestern, along with a Certificate in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
His research focuses on the screening, prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. He develops and evaluates pragmatic, electronic health record-driven interventions to improve clinical processes and healthcare delivery in collaboration with UT Southwestern, Parkland Health & Hospital System, and community organizations. His work bridges clinical care, health informatics, and population health.
Although specific publications are not listed, Dr. Bowen has published scores of academic articles and delivered numerous national and international invited lectures, indicating a strong and sustained scholarly output in general internal medicine, outcomes research, and diabetes care.

Dr. Bowen co-directs the General Internal Medicine Fellowship at UT Southwestern and serves as section editor for the Journal of General Internal Medicine. He has held leadership roles in the VA National Quality Scholars Alumni Committee and the Society of General Internal Medicine’s evidence-based medicine task force. He is an active member of professional organizations including the Society of General Internal Medicine, the American Diabetes Association, and the Texas Medical Association.
He is involved in training future physicians and researchers through his fellowship leadership and academic mentorship. His work is supported by collaborative grants and institutional affiliations with VA and Parkland Health, focusing on improving healthcare systems and community health outcomes.
Dr. Bowen is also engaged in interdisciplinary teams within the Division of Outcomes and Health Services Research and collaborates broadly across clinical and data science domains to innovate in patient-centered care delivery.
