Professor Michael Bowen is a neuroscientist and psychopharmacologist at the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre and School of Psychology. His research focuses on developing novel therapeutics for substance use disorders and social challenges in brain disorders. He leads the Bowen Lab, which combines preclinical models, cutting-edge neuroscience techniques, and machine learning to translate discoveries into clinical treatments. Key collaborations include Kinoxis Therapeutics, advancing compounds like KNX100 for opioid withdrawal management.
His academic roles include Associate Professor and Co-Founder/Chief Scientific Officer of Kinoxis. Awards include the 2021 Prime Minister’s Prize for Science (as part of a team). Research spans oxytocin receptor modulation, cannabinoid effects, and GABA-A receptor mechanisms, with over 30 patents filed globally. Current projects include small molecule therapeutics for autism spectrum disorder, agitation/aggression in dementia, and sleep-sociability entanglement mechanisms.
The Bowen Lab employs 6 PhD students, 4 postdocs, and a multidisciplinary team. Notable grants include NHMRC funding for GABA-A receptor research. Patents cover treatments for social disorders, substance use, and weight management. Alumni have transitioned to roles in academia, industry, and clinical practice.
