Professor Iain McGregor is a Professor of Psychopharmacology and Academic Director of the Lambert Initiative for Cannabinoid Therapeutics at the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Science. He holds memberships in The Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation and the Charles Perkins Centre. His research focuses on cannabinoid therapeutics, psychopharmacology, and the role of oxytocin in addiction and social behavior.
McGregor completed his undergraduate degree in Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford and earned his PhD in Psychology from the University of Sydney. His work bridges preclinical and clinical research, with a strong emphasis on translational studies.
His research interests include cannabinoid-based treatments for addiction, mental health disorders, and pain management. Notable projects include studies on cannabidiol (CBD) for alcohol use disorder, cannabis policy analysis, and oxytocin’s role in anorexia nervosa. He has led over 300 publications and secured grants for high-throughput drug discovery and cannabis policy research.
McGregor’s work has been featured in major media outlets like the Sydney Morning Herald, ABC Catalyst, and Channel 9’s 60 Minutes. He collaborates with industry partners such as Kinoxis Therapeutics, focusing on developing novel ant-addiction drugs. His team also investigates synthetic cannabinoids and their pharmacological profiles.
Key collaborations include the Lambert Initiative’s partnership with medicinal chemistry groups and the development of cannabis-derived therapies for conditions like epilepsy and insomnia. His research emphasizes ethical drug discovery and public health policy alignment.
