معرفی
Michael Bostock is a Professor in the Department of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC), within the Faculty of Science. He specializes in subduction zone dynamics, seismology, and tectonic processes. His research integrates seismic data analysis to explore deformation mechanisms at plate boundaries, including the Cascadia and Queen Charlotte subduction zones.
Education: M.App.Sc. (1988, Queen’s University), Ph.D. (1991, Australian National University), Postdoctoral Fellow at Utrecht University (1991–1993). Joined UBC faculty in 1993.
Research focuses on: (1) Subduction zone structure and fluid-driven deformation, particularly mantle wedge hydration and its implications for earthquake hazards and magmatism. (2) Early continental crust formation via subduction processes, supported by seismic imaging of cratonic roots. Key projects include the POLARIS consortium, deploying seismic instruments to study Canadian margins.
Notable contributions include identifying hydrated mantle in Cascadia’s forearc and linking anisotropic layering in cratons to ancient subduction. His work bridges geophysical theory and field observations, with applications to natural hazard mitigation and Earth’s hydrologic cycle.
Current projects address strain partitioning at the Queen Charlotte Fault, tremor mechanics in Cascadia, and offshore seismic imaging of subduction initiation. He supervises graduate students in geophysics, seismology, and inverse methods, with over 30+ doctoral and master’s advisees.
