Michael Bjornberg serves as Associate Professor in Practice in the School of Design at the University of Minnesota, teaching Adaptive Reuse of endangered historic sites while maintaining a 35-year career as Project Manager and Historic Architect at HGA, Inc. His portfolio includes landmark projects across the United States such as University of Notre Dame’s Main Administration Building, University of Minnesota’s Coffman Union, American Swedish Institute, Historic Fort Snelling, and the ongoing Restoration of the Minnesota State Capitol.
His research centers on practical applications of historic preservation, specializing in adaptive reuse methodologies for endangered structures. He develops strategic campus planning frameworks, design guidelines, and facility assessments for educational institutions nationwide, integrating historical integrity with contemporary functional requirements through hands-on conservation projects.
Key recognition includes Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects (FAIA). Professional leadership encompasses current Board Chairmanship of the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota and advisory roles on the AIA National Historic Resources Committee, advancing preservation standards through policy and practice.
