Michael Benediktsson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Hunter College, CUNY, affiliated with the School of Arts and Sciences. He joined Hunter College in 2011 after earning his PhD in Sociology from Princeton University. His research focuses on material objects' role in shaping social life, examining urban environments like suburban housing, smartphone use in transit systems, and contested urban spaces. Benediktsson teaches Urban Sociology, media sociology, and social theory courses across departments including the Graduate Applied Digital Sociology program and Macaulay Honors College. He coordinates The Peopling of New York City seminar and organizes research workshops like the Digital Communities, Digital Media seminar (2013-2015). His mixed-methods work has been published in journals such as City & Community, Urban Geography, and Symbolic Interaction.
Education: PhD in Sociology from Princeton University.
Research interests emphasize material culture's sociological implications, including how objects mediate social norms and urban dynamics. His current book manuscript explores New York City's urban artifacts' social lives. Benediktsson integrates student participation into research projects and maintains an active presence in Brooklyn's soccer communities and Catskill trout streams.
