Michael Bell is the Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor of Community and Environmental Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with faculty affiliations in Environmental Studies, Religious Studies, and Agroecology. He leads the Soil Health and Agroecological Living Lab (SHALL) and serves as co-PI on the $10 million USDA-funded Grassland 2.0 project.

His research integrates environmental sociology, agroecology, and community studies, focusing on the social meaning of nature and its ties to inequality across class, race, gender, and rural-urban divides. Recent work explores heritage sociology and perennial agricultural systems.
