Michael Begon is Professor of Ecology at the University of Liverpool's Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, where he served as Head of the Department of Evolution, Ecology and Behaviour from 2010-2018. His research focuses on the ecology of infectious diseases in wildlife populations, particularly zoonotic diseases like leptospirosis in Brazilian favelas and bubonic plague in Central Asia.
Research interests center on multi-host pathogen dynamics, environmental determinants of disease transmission, and impacts of climate change on zoonoses. Specific areas include:
- Wildlife reservoirs of antibiotic resistance
- Cross-species transmission mechanisms
- Urban ecosystem epidemiology
- Immunodynamics in natural host populations
Publications demonstrate strong focus on rodent-borne diseases, microbiome interactions, and superspreader dynamics. Recent work emphasizes urban transmission landscapes and longitudinal wildlife studies.
Awards recognizing contributions:
- Marsh Award for Ecology (2009)
- Exceptional Lifetime Achievement Award (2007)
Significant research funding includes projects from Wellcome Trust, MRC, and EU commissions focusing on plague prediction models, leptospirosis control, and climate-disease interactions.
