Frauke Ecke is a Professor at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, affiliated with the Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Research Programme and Helsinki One Health. She supervises the Doctoral Programme in Wildlife Biology. Her research focuses on ecology, evolutionary biology, disease ecology, and rodent population dynamics.
Key research interests include zoonotic pathogens, climate change impacts on Arctic ecosystems, and invasive species effects on freshwater ecosystems. Recent work examines lemming population cycles in the Arctic, biomagnification of pollutants, and the role of host communities in pathogen outbreaks.
Her publications span 2021–2024, addressing topics such as viral zoonoses in bats, microbial diversity in urban soils, and nitrogen cycling in freshwater systems. She leads projects like BEPREP (preventing future pandemics) and WildAP (wildlife phenotyping infrastructure), emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to environmental and health challenges.
Frauke Ecke collaborates internationally, including with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Her work bridges ecological research with societal applications, particularly in One Health and conservation biology.
