Michael Becken is a Professor at the University of Münster's Department of Geophysics, specializing in Applied Geophysics with a focus on Electromagnetic Methods and Magnetotellurics. His research addresses geodynamic modeling of intra-plate deformation, mineral exploration, and lithospheric electrical conductivity imaging. He leads projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), including the Heisenberg Professorship, and collaborates on federally funded initiatives like DESMEX for raw material exploration. His work combines field experiments, large-scale 3D modeling, and semi-airborne electromagnetic techniques to study tectonic processes in regions such as Mongolia and the Tibetan Plateau.
Education: Dr. rer. nat. in Geophysics (2005), Diplom in Geosciences (2000). Key projects include geodynamic modeling in Mongolia (2023–2025), semi-airborne EM exploration in the Harz Mountains (2021–2025), and studies on CO2 sequestration. His research spans mineral systems, crustal dynamics, and fluid migration pathways, with applications to resource exploration and geodynamic processes.
Publications emphasize high-impact journals like Earth and Planetary Science Letters and Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems. Awards/recognitions include DFG Heisenberg funding. Grants total over €5M across 10+ projects. Active in developing novel EM technologies, such as UAV-based systems for deep resource exploration.
