Michael Baker is a Senior Lecturer and Diamond Light Source – Manchester Research Fellow at the University of Manchester's Department of Chemistry. His research focuses on electronic structure and magnetism of metal ions and clusters using X-ray and neutron spectroscopy, particularly resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). He has held postdoctoral positions at Stanford University, New York University, and Tohoku University. His awards include the Human Frontiers Science Program Cross-Disciplinary Fellowship (2014) and the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (2011).
Research interests include actinide physicochemical properties, quantum technologies exploiting electronic configurations, and bio-inorganic catalysis. He leads projects like the University of Manchester at Harwell and has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles. His work has been highlighted in Nature Blogs and Diamond Light Source publications.
