Kun Yan

Kun Yan is a Lecturer in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the University of Manchester's School of Materials. She joined in 2015 as a Research Fellow, investigating damage formation in advanced high-strength multi-phase steels. Her work, supported by Tata Steel Europe and Diamond Light Source, employs in-situ X-ray diffraction and tomography to study phase-strain interactions and macro-inclusions. During her PhD at ANSTO and the University of Wollongong, she explored deformation mechanisms in high-manganese steels, including TWIP and TRIP steels, using EPSC/VPSC models to analyze twinning, phase transformations, and slip effects. She also advises on residual stress assessment and finite element modeling for sub-sea oil and gas equipment.

Her research focuses on deformation mechanisms in advanced steels, including cryogenic deformation of stainless steels and precipitation behavior in magnesium alloys. Key themes are mechanical performance of alloys under extreme conditions and sustainable materials development aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Grants and Projects: She contributes to the University of Manchester at Harwell initiative, exploring nanoparticle behavior, tomography, and oxidation reactions in materials. Collaborative efforts include studies on high-entropy alloys and additive manufacturing of stainless steels.
