Michael Bader is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University. He previously held positions at American University, including roles in Sociology and Public Administration & Policy departments. His research focuses on urban sociology, gentrification, health inequality, and demography, with a particular interest in how neighborhoods evolve and influence societal dynamics.
Bader holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Michigan (2009) and a BA in Architecture & Art History from Rice University (2003). His work combines methodological innovation, such as using Google Street View for neighborhood audits and machine learning for environmental measurements, to study urban health and social disparities.
His honors include the William M. LeoGrande Award (2018) and the Greg Alexander Outstanding Student Paper Award (2009). Bader has led grants on neighborhood audits, racial segregation, and food environments, collaborating with institutions like the National Institutes of Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
He teaches courses on urban policy, epidemiology of everyday life, and advanced quantitative methods. His research has been published in journals like Social Problems, Annals of Epidemiology, and Health & Place, with a focus on neighborhood integration, racial equity, and public health outcomes.
