Michael Arnzen is a Professor of English at Seton Hill University, specializing in horror/suspense writing and cinema studies. He serves as Assistant Director of the university's MFA program in Writing Popular Fiction and has advised its graduate workshops since 1999. His dual role as a scholar and creative writer includes mentoring novelists, chairing the Humanities Division (2009-2015), and advising the campus literary magazine Eye Contact for over 18 years.
Education: Ph.D. in English from University of Oregon (1999), M.A. from University of Idaho (1994), B.A. from Colorado State University-Pueblo (1991).
Research focuses on horror genre criticism, pedagogy of creative writing, and the intersection of literature/film. His scholarly work analyzes films like The Exorcist and Maximum Overdrive, while his creative output includes award-winning novels and poetry collections such as Proverbs for Monsters and The Gorelets Omnibus. His pedagogical blog Pedablogue explored teaching methodologies from 2003-2012.
Awards include four Bram Stoker Awards and Seton Hill’s Professor of the Year (2010-11). He is active in professional organizations like the Horror Writers Association and serves on editorial boards for Paradoxa and Dissections: The Journal of Contemporary Horror.
His academic service includes over 20 years of faculty work recognized by the Caritas Medal (2019). He frequently presents at writing conferences and workshops, including StokerCon and the International Conference for the Fantastic in the Arts.
