Michael Allis is a Professor of Musicology at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Music within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures. He holds a BMus from the Royal College of Music, an MMus from King's College London, and a PhD from the same institution focusing on Hubert Parry's creative process. His academic career includes roles at the Royal Academy of Music and Leeds, where he was appointed Chair in Musicology in 2015.
His research specializes in 19th- and early 20th-century British music, with a focus on interdisciplinary connections between music and literature. Key works include monographs on Parry’s creative process, British music-literary contexts, and Aldous Huxley’s music criticism. He co-edited volumes on symphonic poems and co-leads the 'Music as Culture' research cluster.
Notable publications span analyses of Elgar, Bantock, and Wallace, with recent projects exploring Bantock’s orchestral reworkings of literature. He has received the C.B. Oldman Award (2019) for his edited work on Bantock’s letters. Allis has supervised over 15 PhD students on topics ranging from Elgar’s narrative techniques to modern metal’s national identity.
He has served as an external examiner for UK and international institutions, including Oxford, Durham, and Melbourne. Current research includes studies on Cecil Armstrong Gibbs and British perspectives on the 1928 Columbia Schubert competition.
