Dr. Micah Corum is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at the University of North Georgia (UNG), part of the College of Arts & Letters. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Hamburg (2013) and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Puerto Rico (2017), along with a B.A. in Spanish from Oklahoma State University (2005). His primary research focuses on sociolinguistics, construction grammar, and the study of pidgins and Creoles, particularly in the Caribbean and West African contexts. Dr. Corum advises UNG's linguistics minor program and serves on the editorial board of Odisseia, while also acting as an external reviewer for the Journal of African Languages and Linguistics since 2015.
His teaching portfolio includes courses such as Standard English Grammar, Advanced English Grammar, and Introduction to English Linguistics, delivered both online and in-person. Dr. Corum's research explores themes like the historical development of pidgins and Creoles, discourse strategies in Caribbean Creoles, and typological analyses of contact languages. His recent work examines metaphorical frameworks in Creole lexicons and geopolitical metaphors in colonial discourse.
Key contributions include his 2015 monograph on spatial semantics in West African Pidgincreoles and a 2021 analysis of Caribbean postcolonial linguistic discourses. Dr. Corum has presented at international conferences including the International Bakhtin Conference and the Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics, showcasing his expertise in cognitive linguistics applications to Creole studies.
