Mia Maric is a Research Fellow (Nuclear Fuel Cladding) at the University of Manchester's Department of Materials Engineering. Her research focuses on developing novel characterization tools for understanding corrosion and irradiation performance of zirconium claddings. She is a Co-Investigator (CoI) in the £9m EPSRC MIDAS Program Grant, investigating hydride effects in irradiated cladding materials. She supervises three PhD students and previously worked as a consultant at Jacobs specializing in high-temperature material behavior.
Education: PhD in Engineering from the University of Manchester (2019–2021), awarded in 2022 with a thesis on 'Influence of Metallurgical State on Hydride Precipitation and Reorientation in Zircaloy-4'. Notable awards include the IOM3 Young Person Lecture Award and UK representation at global scientific events.
Research interests span nuclear materials, corrosion science, and advanced characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. She collaborates internationally on projects involving zirconium alloys, hydride analysis, and irradiation effects.
Her work contributes to improving nuclear fuel cladding durability, with projects like the MIDAS Grant and publications on cladding coatings, hydride behavior, and mechanical performance under irradiation. She is part of the Materials Performance Centre (MPC), focusing on stress corrosion cracking and corrosion in nuclear environments.
