Mette Rømer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Aalborg University, affiliated with The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. Her work focuses on vulnerable groups, particularly those navigating transnational challenges and encounters with social systems. She holds a PhD in Social Work from Aalborg University, alongside a Master's and pedagogical qualifications.
Her research explores marginalized populations such as sex-trafficked individuals, adults with intellectual disabilities, and victims of child marriage, emphasizing co-research methodologies and citizen perspectives. She teaches global social work, transnational social policy, and qualitative methods at the Master’s level in Social Work and Criminology.
Rømer leads projects like CoCoSo (co-construction in social work) and RESPONSIVE (enhancing citizen voice in European social services), alongside studies on Greenlandic offenders and forensic care for intellectually disabled individuals. She has supervised numerous PhD students in social work-related fields and contributed to over 26 peer-reviewed publications since 2015.
Her research bridges ethical dilemmas in practice, cross-border social policy, and participatory approaches to marginalized communities. Notable grants include EU Horizon projects and national initiatives addressing human trafficking and institutional reforms.
