Dr. Merrilee Gietz is an Instructional Associate Professor in the American Sign Language Interpreting (ASLI) program at the University of Houston's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. With over 21 years of experience teaching in ASL and interpreting programs, she specializes in ASL linguistics, literature, and interpreting practices. She holds a Ed.D. in Deaf Studies/Education from Lamar University, an M.S. in Deaf Education from McDaniel College, and a B.A. in History from Gallaudet University.
Her teaching spans courses like Advanced ASL Literature, Interpreting Techniques, and Comparative Linguistics. Research focuses on integrating ASL creativity into pedagogy and improving educational outcomes for deaf learners. Her publications explore mentoring Deaf academics, ASL literary devices enhancing vocabulary, and applying haiku principles to language teaching.
Professional service includes roles on the Justin Dart Jr. Accessibility Center Advisory Board, University of Houston Library Committee, and Lone Star College Interpreter Training Technology Advisory Board. She advocates for accessibility and deaf education through interdisciplinary collaboration.
