Dr Merlin Willcox is a Principal Research Fellow at the University of Southampton's Faculty of Medicine within the Department of Primary Care. With dual roles as both an active clinician and researcher, Dr Willcox maintains clinical practice at Luther St Medical Centre in Oxford and with the Oxfordshire Urgent Care Service while conducting significant research in global health areas.
Dr Willcox's educational background includes:
- Medical qualification from University of Oxford (1998)
- General Practitioner training completed (2004)
Research interests center on global maternal and child health, antibiotic stewardship, and systematic reviews of traditional herbal medicine. This work bridges conventional medicine with complementary approaches, focusing on primary health care systems, clinical trials of herbal interventions for respiratory infections and diabetes management, and improving maternal mortality surveillance in resource-limited settings. The research demonstrates strong interdisciplinary collaboration across medical specialties and international contexts.
Analysis of recent publications reveals consistent methodological approaches combining systematic reviews with clinical trials and qualitative implementation research. Key thematic areas include evidence-based evaluation of traditional medicines for respiratory conditions and diabetes management, alongside critical work on maternal health systems in low- and middle-income countries. This research portfolio reflects a commitment to practical healthcare solutions that address antibiotic resistance while respecting cultural contexts of care.
Dr Willcox's significant contributions to medical research have been recognized through prestigious awards:
- Michael Arthur Prize (2019)
- Academy of Medical Sciences Prize for best published research 2018 (awarded 2019)
- Prize for best oral presentation at Faculty of Medicine Conference (2020)
As an academic supervisor, Dr Willcox mentors multiple PhD students including Immaculate Okello Ajok, Eunice Oluwatosin Aroyewun, and Florence Nakaggwa in Primary Care and Population Sciences. Research funding comes from major sources including the Medical Research Council (for projects like Antenatal Couples' Counselling in Uganda and Family Planning: Fact or Fiction) and Research England (for Optimising MPDSR). Current projects span continents, addressing maternal health in Uganda, mental health of asylum seekers, and herbal medicine trials for respiratory conditions.
Dr Willcox is an active member of the Primary Care Research Centre and the Global Health Community of Practice at the University of Southampton, contributing to international collaborations across Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, and the UK. External engagement includes speaking engagements such as 'FOOD AS MEDICINE: The Top Herbs That Can Treat Diabetes' (2023), demonstrating knowledge translation beyond academic settings.
