Merja Hannele Kontro is a Lecturer at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Ecosystems and Environment Research Programme and the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS). She serves as a supervisor for doctoral programs in Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences, Microbiology, and Biotechnology.
Research Interests: Her work spans Aquatic Ecotoxicology and Environmental Chemistry, focusing on pesticide dissipation in groundwater and biostimulation for contaminant remediation. She also explores Circular Economy innovations, including PHAs production from waste and bioactive molecule isolation from waste streams to combat hospital bacteria biofilms.
Projects & Funding: Currently managing EU-funded projects like BIOKIERTO (PHAs from organic waste) and Hämeen ELY-keskus HUUMA. Previously funded by the Academy of Finland BioFuture program, Maj and Tor Nessling Foundation, and Kolli Foundation.
Collaborations & Teaching: Collaborates with institutions like the European Commission's Joint Research Centre and Lab-ammattikorkeakoulu Oy. Teaches courses such as ENV-392 Bio- and Environmental Technology in Urban Context and ECGS-045 Laboratory Course in Environmental Biotechnology and Chemistry. Active in conferences like the 9th European Conference on Pesticides and BioFuture 2025 Annual Seminar.
