Meridith A. Balas

Meridith A. Balas serves as Service Assistant Professor in General Business at West Virginia University, directing the Nemacolin Hospitality Lab within the Hardy Family Hospitality and Tourism Program. With 15+ years bridging academia and industry, she leads experiential learning initiatives connecting students with hospitality leaders while advancing WVU's land-grant mission through regional partnerships.

Her academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Higher Education from West Virginia University, M.Ed. in College Student Affairs Administration from the University of Georgia, B.A. in Advertising and Public Relations from Penn State, and a Certificate in Business Law from Cornell Law School.

Dr. Balas's research centers on women's leadership in Appalachian social justice movements and equity in higher education administration, informed by her industry background at Disney Institute where she designed leadership programs using theme parks as immersive classrooms. Her teaching integrates storytelling, diversity initiatives, and operational excellence in hospitality contexts.

Recent publications analyze women-led Appalachian movements and career pathways for women administrators, revealing patterns in grassroots organizing and institutional barriers within land-grant universities.
