Meredith Guthrie is a Teaching Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research focuses on western contemporary mass media, particularly intersections of youth/girl culture, marketing, celebrity culture, and disability representation in children’s literature. She also examines the homosexual gaze in film and diabetes narratives in young adult fiction.

Her work analyzes media’s role in shaping cultural norms, including the construction of the ‘tween’ demographic through cable television and the societal implications of media aimed at children. She explores how media depictions impact identity formation, particularly around gender, sexuality, and health.
Publications (2007) include studies on menstruation representation, queer analysis of film narratives, service-learning pedagogy in cultural studies, and disability narratives in young adult fiction. Courses taught include Mass Communication Process, Media & Consumer Culture, and specialized topics like Disney and Sitcom History.
