Dr. Menna Agha is an Associate Professor of Design and Spatial Justice at Carleton University, where she explores the intersection of race, gender, space, and territory. She is also cross-appointed at Carleton's Institute for African Studies and serves as the founding Director of the Architecture Action Lab. Her research is deeply informed by her identity as a third-generation displaced Nubian woman.
- PhD in Architecture (University of Antwerp, 2019)
- MA in Integrated Design (Cologne University of Applied Sciences, 2011)
- BS in Architectural Engineering (October 6 University, 2009)
Her work challenges normative spatial practices through feminist epistemology, focusing on Nubian displacement, matrilineal traditions, and the erosion of women's public space post-Egypt's High Dam. She critiques Islamophobic and victimizing narratives of Muslim women, emphasizing their agency in redefining urban environments and religious identity.
Recent publications examine topics like Nubian displaceability, emotional capital in architecture, and spatial resistance through informal urban practices. Her research spans architecture, gender studies, urban planning, and decolonial theory.
Agha's lab investigates how marginalized communities contest spatial oppression, particularly in post-displacement settings. She advocates for design justice frameworks that center subaltern voices and resist oppressive governance structures.
