Melynda Seaton serves as Assistant Professor of Art History in the Department of Art within the College of Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts at East Texas A&M University, where she has taught since 2019. Her expertise centers on contemporary art with specialized focus on Native American artists and photographic practices, informed by extensive curatorial experience at institutions including History Colorado and the University of Nebraska's Great Plains Art Museum.
Her academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Oklahoma (2015), where she pioneered the Art of the American West program, an M.A. in Art History from the University of North Texas (2006), and a B.A. in Art from West Texas A&M University (1999). She previously held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Oklahoma, and Art Institute of Dallas.
Dr. Seaton's research critically examines how contemporary Indigenous artists reinterpret historical symbols and narratives, particularly through works engaging with James Earle Fraser's "End of the Trail" sculpture. Her scholarship bridges art history, cultural studies, and museum practice, emphasizing direct artist engagement and community collaboration. Current projects explore decolonizing visual culture in the American West through the lenses of photography and contemporary Indigenous perspectives.
Her publication portfolio demonstrates consistent thematic focus on Native American representation, regional Western history, and art's role in social discourse. Recent works analyze artistic responses to colonial iconography while earlier projects documented Colorado's cultural shifts through dude ranch tourism and marijuana legalization history, revealing her interdisciplinary methodology connecting visual culture with lived experience.
Dr. Seaton has secured significant research funding throughout her career, with notable recognition including:
- Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Research Grant from East Texas A&M University (2020)
- Multiple Nebraska Arts Council and Humanities Nebraska grants supporting exhibitions like "Contemporary Indigeneity" and "Cowboys from the Collection" (2015-2017)
- Robert & Grayce Kerr Fellowship in Art of the American West (2010-2014)
- Faculty Member of the Quarter at Art Institute of Dallas (2008)
She actively mentors undergraduate and graduate students in art history methodologies, exhibition curation, and research design, integrating her professional curatorial background into classroom practice. Her grant-funded projects frequently create student research opportunities in exhibition development and community-based documentation.
As an integral member of East Texas A&M's Department of Art, Dr. Seaton collaborates with regional institutions including History Colorado and contributes to campus exhibitions such as "Dan Jian: Library of Partial Things" and "Novel Toys, Tricks, and Games." Her curatorial teams emphasize interdisciplinary approaches, merging academic research with public engagement to foster dialogue around contemporary art and cultural heritage.
