Melvyn Roerdink is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), with a focus on merging human movement science with motion technologies. His work spans actor-environment interactions, utilizing 3D depth cameras (Kinect, Hololens) and augmented/mixed reality to innovate in gait rehabilitation and public health.
- Primary Affiliation: Prevention and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences
- Secondary Roles: IBBA Associate Professor, Ancillary activities at Maastricht University (2024-2028), and advisory roles at Strolll Ltd and DIH Holding US Inc.
Dr. Roerdink’s research emphasizes context-dependent walking, leading the development of the C-Mill rehabilitation treadmill and Interactive Walkway to assess and train gait adaptability in stroke patients, elderly, and those with Parkinson’s Disease. He collaborates with PhD students like Daphne Geerse and Bert Coolen on projects involving augmented reality, visual computing, and falls prevention.
His recent articles highlight advancements in augmented reality for gait analysis, with a focus on Parkinson’s Disease (2025-2024), clinical trials for home-based rehabilitation (2025), and biomechanical studies on walking adaptability. He has secured significant grants, including a Veni grant (2009, 250 K€) and EU Erasmus Mundus funding (645 K€ total), alongside 300 K€ industrial investment from C-Mill patents.
