Daphne Geerse

Daphne Geerse is a Researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences. She holds multiple roles within the Amsterdam Movement Sciences (AMS) group, including Research Associate in Prevention and Rehabilitation, Ageing & Vitality, and Rehabilitation & Development. Her work focuses on applying augmented reality (AR) technologies to clinical contexts, particularly for gait and balance assessment in Parkinson’s disease and elderly populations.

Her research interests center on developing innovative AR-based tools for movement analysis, fall-risk assessment, and neurorehabilitation. She has contributed to studies on the validity and reliability of AR glasses for clinical measurements, as well as protocols for home-based AR rehabilitation interventions. Geerse is also involved in validating biomarkers for fall risk and evaluating drug effects on mobility in the elderly.

Recent work includes a randomized controlled trial for AR-based gait rehabilitation in Parkinson’s patients and studies on AR field-of-view optimization for interaction with holographic objects. Her projects emphasize translating technological advancements into practical clinical applications, with a focus on improving patient outcomes in neurorehabilitation and aging research.

Geerse has organized workshops and conferences, such as the International Society for Posture and Gait Research 2019 and the European Society for Movement Analysis in Adults and Children 2019. She collaborates on datasets related to walking adaptability in stroke patients and AR obstacle navigation, contributing to open-access research resources.
