Melvin Thomas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at North Carolina State University (NC State), affiliated with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Virginia Tech (1986) and has held academic positions at NC State since 1995, previously at Temple University and Lehigh University.
His research focuses on racial inequality, social stratification, and the sociology of religion. Key interests include wealth disparities, housing segregation, and the intersection of race, class, and gender. He has authored/co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and edited volumes, including Color Struck: How Race and Complexion Matter in the “Color-Blind” Era (2017) and Race, Ethnicity and the Covid-19 Global Pandemic (2023).
His work examines systemic racial inequities in housing markets, income inequality, and the Obama-era perceptions of racial progress. He has secured grants totaling over $140,000, including a National Science Foundation award (2001) for labor market research. Notable awards include the Mid-South Sociological Association’s Graduate Student Paper Award (1985).
Teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses on race relations, social stratification, and research methods. He has advised multiple research projects and collaborates with scholars like Cedric Herring and Hayward Horton on interdisciplinary studies of racial disparities.
