Melvin G. McInnis, MD, FRCPsych is the Thomas B and Nancy Upjohn Woodworth Professor of Bipolar Disorder and Depression, holding joint appointments as Professor of Psychiatry and Professor of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School. He also serves as Program Director of Bipolar Psychiatry and Center Member at the Center for Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics and Eisenberg Family Depression Center. His research focuses on bipolar disorder pathophysiology, genetic mechanisms, and clinical informatics innovations.
Key areas of investigation include mood disorder biomarkers, lithium responsiveness, and computational approaches to psychiatric knowledge integration. Recent work has explored the intersection of circadian rhythms, genetic factors, and clinical outcomes in bipolar populations. McInnis leads the Prechter Bipolar Research Program, investigating how personality traits and polygenic risks influence disease progression.
His interdisciplinary collaborations span psychiatry, neurobiology, and bioinformatics, with notable contributions to understanding SARS-CoV-2's impact on lithium toxicity in bipolar patients. McInnis actively mentors trainees and directs translational research initiatives aimed at improving mood disorder diagnosis and treatment.
Research achievements include developing novel mood instability prediction methods and advancing ontology-driven psychiatric data systems. His work bridges clinical practice with cutting-edge genomic and neuroimaging technologies to address unmet needs in severe mental health conditions.
