Melnik Denis Valerievich is an Associate Professor at the Department of Theoretical Economics within the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow. He also serves as the Academic Director of the Postgraduate School of Economics and is a Member of the Academic Council of HSE. With over 23 years of scientific and teaching experience, he has been working at HSE since 2011, after previously teaching at St. Petersburg State University from 2001 to 2011.
Dr. Melnik earned his Candidate of Economic Sciences degree from Saint Petersburg State University in 2003, with a dissertation on 'Analysis of the socio-ethical characteristics of capitalism in the works of domestic and foreign scientists (90s of the XIX - 70s of the XX centuries).' He received his academic title of Associate Professor in 2010. His educational background includes specialization in Economic Theory with the qualification 'Economist. Teacher of Economic Theory' from Saint Petersburg State University (2001).
Dr. Melnik's research focuses on the history of economic thought, methodology of economic science, economic history, and social history of science. His work frequently examines Russian economic thought within international contexts, Soviet political economy, and the development of economic ideas in peripheral countries. He has made significant contributions to understanding the discourse on property in Soviet political economy, the reception of Western economic theories in Russia, and the historical development of economic thought in various national contexts.
His extensive publication record shows a clear trend toward examining historical economic thought with particular attention to Russian and Soviet contexts. His recent work (2023-2025) has focused on property discourse in Soviet political economy, market theories in socialist contexts, and the historical development of economic ideas in Russia and Italy. He frequently collaborates with both Russian and international scholars, demonstrating the global relevance of his research.

Dr. Melnik serves as a supervisor for doctoral research, having guided candidates including Galeev A.V. (2023) and Mirakov M.I. (2021). He is actively involved in academic governance as a Member of the Academic Council of HSE and as Deputy Head of the Center for History and Methodology of Economic Science since 2020. His teaching responsibilities include courses on the History of Economic Thought, History of Modern Economic Science, Economic Policy History, and XX-XXI Century Economic Thought, taught in both Russian and English to undergraduate and graduate students.
As Deputy Head of the Center for History and Methodology of Economic Science, Dr. Melnik contributes to the advancement of research in economic thought history and methodology. The center serves as a hub for scholars interested in the historical development of economic ideas and their methodological implications, organizing conferences and publishing research in this field.
