Dr. Melissa Singer is a Professor of Psychology at Bridgewater State University, based in Hart Hall. She earned her PhD from the University of Chicago in 2004, specializing in how social input and nonverbal cues like gestures shape children's learning. Her research bridges mathematical problem-solving and scientific reasoning in developmental contexts.
Research interests include:
- Cognitive development through nonverbal communication
- Gesture-based instructional design
- Mathematical cognition in children
- Scientific reasoning processes
- Representational meaning-making
She teaches foundational and advanced courses including Child Psychology, Research Methods, and specialized seminars on nonverbal communication. Prior to BSU, she conducted post-PhD research at The Learning Sciences Research Institute in Chicago.
