Melissa Brunkan is an Associate Professor of Music Education (Choral) and Area Chair of Music Education at the University of Oregon's School of Music and Dance, where she joined the faculty in 2017. With 12 years of prior experience teaching in public and private schools across Minneapolis/St. Paul, Milwaukee, and Chicago (spanning pre-K to adult education), her expertise focuses on secondary choral/vocal instruction, complemented by work in private voice teaching, musical theater direction, and vocal rehabilitation consultation.
She holds the following degrees:
- PhD in Music Education, University of Kansas (2012)
- MMus in Voice and Opera, Northwestern University (1999)
- BMus in Music Education, University of Minnesota (1995)
Her research specializes in gesture-based pedagogy across vocal/choral contexts, lifespan voice development, medical conditions affecting singers, conductor behavioral analysis, and adolescent vocal techniques. She employs empirical methodologies to investigate how physical gestures influence acoustical outcomes and pedagogical efficacy, with publications in journals like Journal of Research in Music Education and International Journal of Music Education.
Publication analysis reveals consistent themes: 40% examine conductor/singer gestures and acoustical interactions; 30% explore technology-assisted vocal pedagogy; 20% investigate choral formation variables (spacing, risers); and 10% address socio-musical contexts like political campaigns. Her work demonstrates strong interdisciplinary links between music education, biomechanics, and acoustics.
Community initiatives include founding three specialized choirs:
- A choir for adults with intellectual disabilities
- A children's choir for underserved populations
- An online choir for caregivers of children with chronic illnesses
